Abstract
Based on the precept that language learning, both process and product, should be meaningful, TESOL professionals create curriculum and projects to help students explore their identities, gain understanding and appreciation of the other, and build peaceful and sustainable communities. Educators working with immigrants, refugees, and at-risk youths, share their stories.
Session Objectives
Participants will share ways and means of teaching language for peaceful purposes.
Experts and experienced ESOL teachers will present projects which participants will view synchronically (and online, subsequently, for the convenience of those who would otherwise not be able to view). Participants (the 'audience') will have the opportunity to share their successes, and express their ideas and particular needs.
TESOL Peace Forum will develop an ongoing ‘cadre’ of members who will continue to interact and share, post-EVO 17, and post-TESOL Convention, 2017.
Target audience
Teachers of ESOL who are interested in maximising the use of interesting, committed, meaningful content when getting students to learn English. The goal is to reach out to those who wish to participate in a Community of Learning and Practice which, without the medium of EVO, would otherwise not be possible. Teahers of EFL in rural and remote areas in the five continents are the prime target audience.
Syllabus
The focus each week will be one of a series of key talks and demonstrations, presented by ESOL and/or Education specialists, supported by interactive pre- and post- sessions (online) moderated by Peace Forum members * . Additional readings , listenings and viewings will be suggested for each week's focal topic. An online chat group and set of discussion groups will be set up for the participants to enjoy more intimate discussion than is available on the large MOOC - type facilities.
*The topics of the talks are those of the proposed presentations to be made at TESOL,March, 2017, in Seattle. The focus is on working with youth.
